Our story

Each day is made up of small moments of luxury. Crisp, freshly washed sheets. Family chats over dinner. The embrace of a fluffy towel after a swim in the ocean.

They're rituals you mightn't notice. But we're here to handcraft pieces that help you make the most of them.

Since 1991, we’ve been family owned and run. Passion for textiles has run in the Adairs family for five generations. It’s why we still make bed linen and bedding in Melbourne today.

"Our search for world-class quality is never quite over. Second-best doesn’t quite cut it for us. "

- robert adair

Our family opened the first Adairs store on Chapel Street, Melbourne back in the early 1900s. What was a small haberdashery store soon changed when it moved to the centre of Camberwell junction. The glimpse back into our past and heritage that you see pictured means a lot to us. This was the place where our family evolved the business into a boutique textiles retailer; the place that started our Abode journey.

This initial store soon grew to five different wholesale stores across Melbourne. Yet we always dreamed of handcrafting luxury pieces ourselves. That is until we parted ways with Adairs to create Abode.

Robert started hand-stuffing feather and down pillows out the back of our Abode Burke Road store in 1991. From there, we sourced a small collection of homewares and began to sew small runs of sheeting and quilts.

Once in our Camberwell Road concept store in October, 2000 we opened workrooms to sew a wider range of bed linen ourselves.

Robert’s son, Ben joined the business in 2005 and his wife Amelia did the same shortly after.

We’re still immensely proud to craft the finest textiles in Camberwell today.

ETHOS

Our search for world-class quality is never quite over. Second-best doesn’t quite cut it for us.

Forgive us for stating the obvious, but all the best family moments happen in the home. That’s why we’re drawn to making it a more wonderful place.

Our business depends on good relationships. With each other, our Melbourne needleworkers and European craftsmen. And, of course, our customers. By cutting out the middle-man, we’re committed to offering the better value they deserve.
